Product Details
Betaseron is an antiviral medication made from human proteins. It’s used to help reduce the number of relapses in those with multiple sclerosis (MS). This medication isn’t a cure for MS, but it can slow the disease and decrease flare-ups.
The common side effects of Betaseron includes: headache, weakness, insomnia, stomach pain, muscle pain or stiffness, abnormal liver function tests, skin rash, flu-like symptoms, skin reaction at injection site.
The more serious side effects may include:
• Heart problems
• Kidney problems
• Liver problems
• Low white blood cell counts
• Lupus-like symptoms
• Pain, swelling, or redness at injection site
• Pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding
• Seizures
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Signs of a serious blood cell disorder
• Suicidal thoughts or tendencies
You should not take Betaseron if you are allergic to Interferon Beta-1B, latex, albumin, or mannitol. Before you start taking Betaseron, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.
This medication can cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby. You should not use this medication while you are pregnant or nursing. Talk to your doctor about the risks.
Precautions
Be sure to take Betaseron exactly as your doctor describes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication.
Betaseron is injected under the skin every 48 hours. Until you understand how to self-inject this medication and properly dispose of the used needles and syringes, have someone else administer this medication for you.
Store any unmixed medicine at room temperature away from heat and moisture. After mixing, store in the refrigerator and use within three hours. Do not freeze this medication.
Each vial is a single use-dose. Throw away after its use.
There can be interactions between Betaseron and other medications. In particular, immunosuppressants. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Betaseron.
You may need frequent medical tests to make sure Betaseron is not causing unwanted side effects. In particular, you will need frequent blood tests to check your liver function.
To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:
• Anemia
• Bleeding or blood clotting disorder
• Congestive heart failure
• Epilepsy or other seizure disorder
• History of depression or suicidal thoughts/tendencies
• History of low white blood cell counts
• If you are allergic to latex
• Liver disease

1. Can I freeze Betaseron to make it last longer?
Answer: No, this medication should not be frozen. However, if you mix the ingredients, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 hours.
2. Can I use this medication if I’m pregnant?
Answer: Betaseron has been known to cause miscarriage or otherwise be harmful to a developing fetus. Do not use this medication when you are nursing or pregnant.
3. Can I drink alcohol while taking Betaseron?
Answer: No, drinking alcohol while taking this medication can cause serious side effects. You should also avoid being near people who are sick or have infections while on this medication.
