Ferriprox (Deferiprone) is a prescription medication used to treat iron overload caused by blood transfusions in people with thalassemia syndrome or sickle cell disease, which are hereditary red blood cell disorders. The active ingredient in Ferriprox is Deferiprone. Deferiprone belongs to the class of medications called iron-chelating agents. Deferiprone works by binding to iron and removes it from the bloodstream.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Ferriprox are nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite, abdominal pain, and muscle pain.

Stop using Ferriprox and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Blood and lymphatic system disorders such as thrombocytosis, pancytopenia;
• Body swellings;
• Eye problems such as double vision;
• Fever;
• Flu-like symptoms;
• Heart failure;
• Infections and infestations such as Cryptococcal cutaneous infection, furuncle, rash;
• Severe neutropenia or agranulocytosis;
• Sore throat;
• Vascular disorders such as Hypotension, hypertension;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Ferriprox if you are allergic to deferiprone or to any of the ingredients in Ferriprox. It can cause hypersensitivity reactions such as Henoch-SchÖnlein purpura, urticaria, and periorbital edema with skin rash. Before you start using Ferriprox, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A history of agranulocytosis;
• A history of neutropenia (low white blood cells count);
• Any other medical conditions;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. There may be a drug interaction between Ferriprox and other drugs such as aluminum-based antacid, carbimazole, dapsone, methimazole, penicillin G, procainamide, rituximab, sulfasalazine, etc. Avoid drugs such as diclofenac, probenecid, or silymarin (milk thistle) with deferiprone. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Ferriprox can harm the unborn baby. You should be on an approved contraceptive while taking Ferriprox to avoid getting pregnant. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Ferriprox passes into your breast milk. Ferriprox is effective and safe for use in children above eight years of age.
