Product Details

Palafer is a type of iron, which is essentially a body mineral that you would ordinarily get through the foods you eat. It becomes part of your blood and carries oxygen to tissues and organs. Palafer is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (low levels of iron).

The common side effects of Palafer includes: constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, loss of appetite, and black or dark-colored stools and urine.

The more serious side effects may include:

• Bright red blood in stools
• Pain in your chest or throat when swallowing the tablet
• Signs of allergic reaction
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

You should not take Palafer if you are allergic to Ferrous Fumarate, iron, or do not wish to consume animal byproducts, or if you have iron overload syndrome, anemia, or thlassemia. Before you start taking Palafer, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

It’s unknown whether Palfer will harm an unborn or nursing baby. It’s best to avoid this version of iron while pregnant or nursing. Talk to your doctor about the risks.

Precautions

Be sure to take Palafer exactly as your doctor describes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication.

Take Palafer on an empty stomach 1-2 hours before or after a meal, with a full glass of water. Do not crush, break, chew, or open an extended release tablet or capsule. Swallow the medication whole. For oral syrup or drops, measure your dose accurately with the special spoon or medicine cup. Do not use a regular table spoon.

To prevent tooth staining, mix the liquid with water or juice (not milk) and drink through a straw. If staining occurs, clean your teeth with baking soda 1x per week.

Do not consume antacids or antibiotics within 2 hours before or after taking Palafer.

Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

There can be interactions between Palafer and other medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Palafer.

An overdose of Palafer can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose of this medicine, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms include: nausea, severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, shallow breathing, weak or rapid pulse, pale skin, blue lips, and seizures.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Hemolytic anemia
