Product Details

Prolopa (Levodopa/Benserazide) a combination medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Levodopa help to control the symptoms of Parkinson’s by correcting the chemical imbalance in the brain. While Levodopa can be used alone, by adding benserazide, it lowes the amount of levodopa needed and may reduce certain unwanted side effects like nausea and vomiting that can be associated with levodopa. This medication is not a cure and will not slow down the progression of Parkinson’s. It is only used to help reduces the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Common side effects may include belching, constipation, dark sweat or urine, decreased coordination, diarrhea, fatigue, flushing, headache, increased sexual desire, irritability, loss of appetite, nausea, nightmares, insomnia, unusual tiredness, and vomiting. The serious side effects may include:

• Compulsive behavior
• Depression
• Fainting
• Impaired thinking
• Mood or mental changes
• Seizures
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Signs of anemia
• Signs of bleeding
• Signs of high blood sugar
• Unwanted movements or difficulty moving
• Urinary problems
• Vision changes

You should not use Prolopa if you are allergic to Levodopa/Benserazide, or if you are under 25 years old, pregnant or may become pregnant, cannot take sympathomimetic amines, have a psychiatric disorder, have active heart disease, blood condition, endocrine disease, liver disease, lung disease, or kidney disease, have narrow angle glaucoma, or take an MAO inhibitor. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication can make its way into breastmilk. You should not nurse an infant while on this medication.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. This medication should start in a lower dose and gradually increased to reduce the side effects. It may need to be taken with a snack to prevent upset stomach.

Swallow the capsules or tablets whole. Do not open, crush, or dissolve them. Store the medication at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

There may be an interaction between Prolopa and other medications, including psychiatric medications, heart medications, and MAO inhibitors. This is not a complete list. 1. Can I take Prolopa if I have a sleep disorder?

In some cases, it may just mean adjusting the dosage or having special monitoring. In other cases, Prolopa may not be recommended.

2. Can my child take Prolopa?
Answer: Prolopa is not approved for anyone younger than 25 years old. Benserazide may cause deformities in the bone density and growth for anyone under this age, so it is not advisable for children.

3. What should I do if I need to stop taking Prolopa?
Answer: This medication should not be stopped suddenly, as severe withdrawal side effects can occur. These include high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, loss of consciousness, sweating, irregular or racing heartbeats, and even fainting. Be sure to talk to your doctor about the best way to reduce the medication slowly to reduce the side effects.
